Film Log 7.17.2015 (BiFan 2015 Edition)

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Director: Stanley Kubrick
Number of viewings: ~5

Comments: I have always had an ambivalent feeling towards this film. I hated it during my first viewing and over time I've grown to love it, but even though I now believe this film to be an essential Kubrick the film's length precludes me to doze off in some scenes.

Moonwalkers (2015)

Director: Antoine Bardou-Jacquet
Number of viewings: 1

Comments: A great homage film to Kubrick and his films. The fake moon landing conspiracy theory is given new legs in this "What If" history lesson. Michel Gondry's influence is evident in the DIY quality of the would-be filmmakers, and lo and behold during the end credits the French director's name is in the Thanks portion of the end credits.

Two Thumbs Up (2015)

Director: Lau Ho-leung
Number of viewings: 1

Comments: The first of two heist films seen so far at BiFan. Loved this crime film. It is not only a great Hong Kong crime picture but an excellent entry into the bowling crime genre, alongside cult classic The Big Lebowski (1998). Simon Yam plays against type by playing a low-key, un-suave, not charming character.
